Subject: Special festive drive to ensure food safety, quality and prevention of adulteration -reg.

Sir/ Madam,

With the onset of upcoming Navratri and Diwali festival, the demand for sweets, savouries, beverages, edible oil and milk & milk products (such as ghee, khoa, paneer, etc.) and other food items witnesses a significant surge across the country.

2. In light of this, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) underscores the need for heightened surveillance and enforcement actions to prevent the circulation of adulterated, counterfeited and unsafe food products namely - Milk & Milk products, Sweets, Snacks & Savouries including Namkeen, papad/fryums, Edible Oil, Beverages and Ghee etc. Further, these commodities may vary and can be decided dependent upon the eating patterns & prevalence in the respective regions (e.g., use of kuttu atta/ singhada atta in northern and western parts).

3. In order to address this concern and to safeguard public health, it is hereby requested that enforcement officials (Designated Officers/Food Safety Officers/Central Food Safety Officers) under your jurisdiction may be directed to conduct inspections and sampling in their respective area during the festive period. These drives may be focused particularly on identified hot spots and sensitive locations under your jurisdiction.

4. Further, it must also be ensured that, Food Safety on Wheels (FSWs), wherever available, may be strategically deployed in prominent market places and/or based on specific intelligence inputs to facilitate on-the-spot testing, strengthen vigilance, create awareness and to boost consumer trust by assuring them of safe and quality food products during the festive season. Additionally, the relevant data of inspection, sampling and their outcome mandatorily to be updated/recorded on FoSCoS / FoSCoRIS on real-time basis.

This matter may be treated as MOST IMPORTANT.
