The Reserve Bank of India issues regulations on the acquisition and transfer of immovable property outside India by persons resident in India. A person resident in India must obtain general or special permission from the Reserve Bank to acquire or transfer immovable property outside India unless the regulations or the Act provide an exception. The rules allow acquisition through specific methods such as gift, inheritance, purchase from a Resident Foreign Currency account, or joint ownership with a non-resident relative without fund outflow from India. Indian companies with overseas offices may acquire property for business and staff residential use. Exemptions apply to foreign nationals and properties acquired on or before July 8, 1947.
